After years hard at work with their Life Pedal designed in collaboration with legendary doom metal band Sunn O))), we now have from Akron's favorite noise merchants the EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) HalfLife Octave Distortion + Booster! A natural evolution on the brand's acclaimed Life Pedal distortion and octave booster, the HalfLife minimizes the method of the celebrated doom drive into a compact form with nothing lost in translation.
The HalfLife is a shrunk-down version of the EQD Life Pedal with all the doomy destruction translated intact. Minimized to half its original size, the only thing taken from the original Life Pedal is its octave effect footswitch. The totality of the Life Pedal's famously doomy tone takes over across two footswitches – one for its octave distortion and another for its analog boost. On its octave distortion side, Amplitude, the HalfLife breathes massive distorted force into a signal with more than sixty decibels of gain on tap. On its analog boost side, Magnitude, cataclysmic levels of boost blow past unity gain at noon and climbing upwards. Either footswitch effect is then shaped with a three-way clipping switch for different silicon diode clipping configurations of smoothness and abrasiveness.
Centrally, the HalfLife is sculpted deeply by a responsive Distortion level control, a shapeable low-pass Filter frequency control, and a blendable Octave control which introduces the pedal's analog octave-up effect gradually – completely erasable by zeroing its dial. If shaping octave presence in real-time sounds like your kind of rodeo, the HalfLIfe features a dedicated octave control expression connection that allows for just that for interesting live playability. Momentary or latching Flexi-Switch footswitching makes on-the-fly playing of the HalfLife even easier while standard power requirements bring the pedal to any and every board.
