Overview

When we released our original Compressor back in 2011, it quickly became a favourite among guitar and bass players alike who were searching for something more than the typical oversimplified controls found on most compressor pedals. Although our original Compressor sounded great on bass (and still does!) we set out to do even better. 

On top of the full range of features and controls normally only seen in high end studio equipment, such as input and gain reduction metering, independent attack and release controls, a mix knob for parallel compression, and an external sidechain insert, we’ve now added a fully variable sidechain high pass filter, and a two position ‘tone + colour’ circuit which adds gentle tone sculpting and harmonic distortion, giving your bass some delicious character.

  • Tone + Color  - Adds mild harmonic distortion with a mid range cut or an upper mid range boost. 
  • Sidechain Send/Return- 3.5mm TRS jack send and return for sidechain compresson.  
  • Sidechain High Pass Filter -  a variable high pass filter that filters low frequencies from the sidechain. The filter frequency ranges from 20Hz to 400Hz.
  • Improved Low End Frequency Response - To handle those low low sounds, completely flat down to 20Hz.
  • True Display LEDs - Bright multi-color LEDs always let you know what the compressor is doing.
  • True Bypass - The Empress Compressor employs true bypass, so you can be sure that it's not affecting the signal when disengaged.
  • Small Size - New enclosure approximately half the size of the original compressor, which is delightfully small when considering all the features packed into this unit.

I’m blown away by this fantastic piece of gear!

A while back I was in the market for a compressor for my bass rig and was deciding mainly between the Hyper Luminal by Darkglass Electronics and the Cali76 Compact Bass Compressor by Origin Effects, and in my reading I came across an increasing number of positive reviews on the new Bass Compressor by Empress Effects, also it turned out to be the most cost effective of the lot, so I bit the bullet and got hold of the Blue Sparkle edition of the Bass Compressor via Stompbox.in (big shoutout to them for the prompt and safe delivery). I wanted to spend some time and miles on it before putting pen to paper.

TL;DR - I’m blown away by this fantastic piece of gear.

Firstly, I have to admit this is the most visually striking pedal I own, that Sparkle Blue finish is gorgeous, that along with the overall build quality gives it a very premium feel. Once engaged, this pedal seemingly breathes new life into my already great sounding bass’ signal, gives it that right amount of “oomph” and gives me the confidence to be more dynamic and expressive with my playing. This pedal offers a ton of control normally found in high end studio grade compressors, it is very transparent and has superb gain reduction.. but my favourite aspect about this compressor: the LED metering system! It is so so satisfying to watch the input level + gain reduction metering in action. The metering is highly intuitive and can even be educational for those with little-to-no experience in adjusting compression. The addition of the Tone+Colour circuit in the compressor adds to the signal subtle hints of harmonic distortion and makes it sound, for the lack of a better word, really yummy!

As a lot of reviews before mine have aptly said, this Bass Compressor is an ‘always ON’ pedal in my signal chain. If you’re a bass player in the market for a compressor and have read till here, just take my word blindly and get yourself the Bass Compressor by Empress Effects, you simply cannot go wrong with this pedal.

An interesting combo of precision and power

I ordered this nifty little pedal in December. I haven't tested it thoroughly just yet. However, here is my first impression. The pedal tames the dynamic range pretty well, and definitely elevates the subtleties in playing with a pretty rich and consistent tone. Pretty versatile in its ability - it certainly preserves the natural character of the tone as far as I could test it. I will certainly use this in my studio sessions and gigs as well. Will update the review once I've tested it in detail. :)
